Every pools coupon lives or dies on draws, and score draws in particular carry weight on most coupon types, so it helps to have more than a gut feeling about which fixtures are actually likely to finish level with goals in it. This calculator gives you two starting points and two models to run them through.

Team form works from each side’s recent scoring average, quick to fill in but blind to injuries, suspensions, and team news. Match odds works from what a bookmaker has already priced in, which does reflect that information, then mathematically strips out their built-in profit margin so you are left with a fair, de-vigged probability rather than the raw price. Neither approach is a certainty. Both are genuinely useful evidence, and using them alongside each other tells you more than either alone.

Underneath, both modes run on a Poisson distribution by default, the standard statistical baseline used across football analytics. Switch to Dixon-Coles if you want a more refined model that specifically corrects the low-scoring cells, 0 to 0, 1 to 0, 0 to 1 and 1 to 1, which a plain Poisson model tends to misjudge slightly. The correction strength is controlled by a single parameter called rho, a small negative value is standard.

How does this calculator actually work?

It uses a Poisson distribution, a standard statistical model for events that happen a known average number of times, applied here to goals per match. Team form mode turns average goals scored and conceded into an expected goals figure directly. Match odds mode works backwards from bookmaker prices, removing their margin first, then searching for the expected goals figures that best reproduce those fair probabilities.

What does de-vigging the odds actually mean?

Bookmaker odds always add up to slightly more than 100 percent when converted to probabilities, that extra percentage is their built-in margin, sometimes called the overround. De-vigging removes it proportionally so the three outcomes sum to exactly 100 percent, giving you the market’s fair view rather than the marked-up price.

Should I use Poisson or Dixon-Coles?

Poisson is the transparent, simpler baseline and a reasonable default. Dixon-Coles applies a small correction to the four low-scoring cells specifically, since real football data shows those scorelines behave slightly differently than a pure independent-goals model predicts. Try both and compare, the difference is usually modest but can matter for tight, low-scoring fixtures.

Why is my score draw percentage lower than I expected?

Score draws are a narrower outcome than a plain draw, since it specifically excludes 0 to 0. Two evenly matched teams still spread their probability across many different scorelines, a single scoreline such as 1 to 1 rarely accounts for more than around 12 to 13 percent even in a close match. Does this account for injuries or team news?

Team form mode does not, it only works from the scoring and conceding averages you enter. Match odds mode indirectly does, since a bookmaker’s price already reflects team news, injuries, and public information at the time the odds were set, which is one reason it can be the more informed starting point.

Is this model actually accurate for football?

Poisson and Dixon-Coles are both widely used starting points in football analytics, not perfect predictors. Goals in football are reasonably close to a Poisson process over a full match, but real matches involve tactics, momentum, and randomness no purely statistical model can fully capture.
